hello
we do not have more information that those collected in the different topics on macrumors and apple forum.
information collected on our french forum : http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?sh...p=1943849&#

After having read all topics on different forum; some things seem not to have been considered:
- trying to install XP from an external drive.
- have you tried to change display resolution priori launching Windows installation?
- is it a true windows installation disk or a copy?
- have you tried to wait something like 30 minutes while you get the black screen? as we have reported it in a recent article on how to install 4 OSes on the Mac Pro, such lag phase during installation have already been noticed: http://www.hardmac.com/articles/63/
- is the problem present when trying to install XP AND Vista, or is it windows version-specific?
- last but not least (for the moment) try to collect serial number of those iMac G4 that seems to be affected by this problem.

Hi there.

It works for me.
24 iMac 256vram, 2Gb, 500HD

BUT

If windows crashes, which games causes it a lot. Or if I restart directly from OS X, the display shows a lot of garbage. The first time I thought I've blown up my iMac or something like that.
So to use windows, I turn off the computer, wait a bit.. (god I hate waiting for computers...) and then turn it on.
I use windows for games and this computer is handling every one I throw at it beautifully.

-I have not tried that.
-i have tried both, original SP2 disc and my slipstreamed SP2 disc
-I havenot tried waiting that long
-I will try Vista this week

I meant iMac Intel smile.gif

concerning external drive, it could be both (optical drive or HD containing the image of SP2)

you should try to wait about 30 minutes only to be sure that what we have seen as lag phase during installation in our article is not simply repeating the same way for you.

Did you look at the last hints I have psoted concerning drivers?

Have you tried to start up from a LinuxCD (knoppix CD for example), simply to be sure that it is not a problem with the optical drive firmware.

hear from you soon smile.gif

Just saw your post over in the Apple forums (I'm KevinBrahl1) and thought I'd add my experience.

24" iMac/2gb RAM/7600GT 256/250 gb HDD
Windows XP SP2 Retail

Basically seeing what everyone with this problem is reporting. iMac boots with the Windows XP disc but you can't see anything but a blank screen, and the screen isn't "off", it's blank. I say that because it is a slightly lighter shade of black than when the screen is actually not on. Anyway, I can hear the iMac boot and I know it's doing something because when I arrow up/down I can hear it churn away. If I knew the XP install routine I could probably do it blindfolded but I don't have enough experience to guess which step is which.

Using an external monitor also does not work for me. I've tried booting with my 20" Acer LCD connected, I've tried plugging it into the iMac AFTER it has booted to the cd and neither way has worked. The LCD just says "No Signal" and goes blank.

I have tried waiting for at least 15 minutes after bootup. I can't imagine that waiting any longer will help but I'm willing to try anything.

I don't know how to make a slipstreamed disk. I assume you put the latest drivers on there and then boot from it? I do have a PC I can use, I just don't know how to do it.

Thanks in advance for any help!
linathael
Thanks smile.gif

- did you try to boot from another WinXP CD/DVD?
- did you try to boot from a LinuxCD?
- Did you reinstall Tiger when you got your iMac, or have you kept the pre-install version?
jrids
sad.gif Right - before anyone says that I'm doing something wrong..... I would like to add that I'm not!

I too have an iMac 24" which I purchased over a month ago. It is experiencing these same black screen issues upon the Windows XP setup. Apple will fix this, it’s juts a matter of time. My thoughts are still that BootCamp is BETA and by next spring when 10.5 is released it will support ALL Intel based Macs (It has to otherwise Apple will need to dish out a lot of refunds). Until then, it’s just a waiting game.

I have been monitoring a lot of posts across many websites regarding this issue, in fact I was one of the early ones to find it ad report back. Just be patient.

Apple have done a good job covering themselves with this by stating to their staff (and clearly on their website) that they DO NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS or the BETA version of BootCamp so asking for a replacement machine is really up to Apple’s discretion.

My advice would be fire an e-mail to "bootcamp@apple.com" stating your machines serial and hardware config and possibly your firmware version (It all helps).

I am in the same boat as all of you and I am too very frustrated. I will be starting my own blog regarding this very soon to try and find out which serials (or range of serials) are affected.

I will keep you all updated if I find out any more.

a team member has a iMAc24" too, and apparently everything is fine for him, we could look at serial, because I think it might explain some things out there.

- The first thing I do with every new Mac I buy is reinstall the OS wink.gif

Actually, I tried installing XP as soon as I took it out of the box, THEN I reinstalled the OS hoping that that would make a difference. Also, I tried XP with 10.4.7 and 10.4.8.

I'm not at my Mac atm so I can't give you my serial, but I will when I get home.

Oh, and I tried waiting again today. Let it sit for over an hour. Nothing.
linathael
after reading Apple forum, it turns out that one user could not even reinstall OSX on its iMac after WinXP installation failed. The optical drive is not recognized anymore, or can not force to boot from it anymore.

My iMac s/n: W86361TXVGN
Spec is: 2.16MHz/1GB/7300GT

I contacted Applecare today, I already knew what the answer would be ("don't know sir"). I was indeed correct. I did point out the recent posts and forums dedicated to this issue but speaking to the front line staff is a waste of time, I would like to speak to the developers!

Can we possibly setup a database to store s/n of affected iMacs? I believe this issue only occurs on units that were purchased shortly after the 24" model was released as I had one of the first units my supplier managed to get hold of.

you can start collecting the serial from this topic, there is not problem with that:
simply get the serials as a quote and add yours:

We need to get more serial numbers to make it valuable.

I also think one will need to get additional information concerning the optical drive sitting in the non compatible BootCamp iMac (might be different manufacturer or firmware).
Should also look at GPU firmware, puzzling that iMac with different GPU are equally affected sad.gif

we are going to publish an update:

it seems that there are 2 different SMC versions for the iMac24":
In France so far, the status seems to follow this rule:
- 1.10f1 => blank display

Hey all!
I've came across this topic in neverending quest to see if anyone has been able to find a fix for Windows booting problems. Hate to break it for you, but my iMac is an exception to SMC rule here. My SMS verion is 1.10f2, but Windows will not install (withouth external monitor, does not work w/o it though). I have iMac CTO iMac 24, 2.33Ghz, NVidia 7600GT 256, serial W86391MGVGP

We got some feedback on the MacBidouille forum.

It seems that some of our readers can not boot when any USB or FireWire device is connected to the Mac. When nothing is connected, Windows accepts to boot. Once the XP desktop has been launched, the peripherals can be connected again and they work blink.gif

Maybe something you should try wink.gif

On a separate note, it does not seem that the SMC version has something to do with this problem.
We have both Windows working and not working with the SMC v1.1.0f2 unsure.gif
linathael
Oki so the SMC is not the solution, eventhough on macbidouille forum only most case of incompatibility are associated with 1.1.0f1.

But... a new report:

- before installing BootCamp try to remove all peripherals except the keyboard and the mouse.

Well I got my very first imac last week and I have had the white screen problem and now the machine is dead!

it is at an apple service centre being fixed but it looks like another week without the machine. I had it for 3 hours before it died.

What a great start to switching from pc to mac!!

its the standard model 24 inch. Serial number is W86380X4VBN

there are no reported issues with other iMac models, and this problem affects only part of the iMac 24".
Apple needs to fix this issue quickly

Well I got my very first imac last week and I have had the white screen problem and now the machine is dead!

it is at an apple service centre being fixed but it looks like another week without the machine. I had it for 3 hours before it died.

What a great start to switching from pc to mac!!

its the standard model 24 inch. Serial number is W86380X4VBN

I'm so annoyed!

that's clear it is bad luck sad.gif
there are no reported issues with other iMac models, and this problem affects only part of the iMac 24".
Apple needs to fix this issue quickly

Does not look good. just restarted, and i hear the CD drive spinning away. Bult in screen is still blank. On, backlght, but blank.

did you unplug all peripherals?
can you reboot from a DVD OSX (forcing it)?

PLEASE COULD YOU POST INFORMATION RELATED TO OPTICAL DRIVE (MODEL + FIRMWARE) smile.gif
I want to be sure that we can eliminate this hypothesis (due to the increasing number of iMac being completely dead after BootCamp installation failure)

i had everthing unplugged except a keyboard, mouse and network.

This is my scond 24" iMac. The first one booted windows fine, but had 6 stuck pixels and bad ram. The new one doesn't run windows, but has a perfect screen and good ram.

Both hum though.

I too, had the grey screen of death. Tried everything, install disks-keyboard commands-external drives... nothing worked.

Did manage to recover from it but not sure if it was sheer persistence or a fluke. Here's what worked:

Connected an external drive via firewire loaded with disk image of install disk 1.
-> Using the OPTION key on bootup would show the drive but couldn't access it.
-> Tried booting up with the drive/firewire attached and using the APPLE+OPTION+SHIFT+DELETE key sequence and after a few minutes, read the drive and I was able to reformat and reinstall OSX.

Have no idea if this is repeatable. Crazy!

The only things I had attached while installing bootcamp and then windows was keyboard to computer and mouse to keyboard.

Here is my system info:
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B00

Sounds good to me smile.gif
so you now have a fully working OSX and WinXP machine, that's correct ?
I will relay your info to check if someone can reproduce it smile.gif
thanks !

Must have missed something here. Darkelf, why did you have to reinstall OS X? I thought the issue was with an uninstallable XP: did the BootCamp faulty installation process damage your OS X? Does what you call the "gray screen of death" involve there's no bootable system upon starting the machine, due to BootCamp failure?
I thought we were dealing with a more basic bug here: XP installation would end on a black screen and thus fail. I mean your bug looks much more serious, yet how can me be even sure it is related to the first one mentioned?
I notice I should check my SMC version. Shall do it tonight.

yes you missed one point wink.gif
there are more and more reports of users loosing entirely access to their iMac after BootCamp installation failed, no way to boot from OSX, even from the DVD install disk.
booting from an external WinXP iso image was also a way I was proposing on apple forum, but did nto get any answer yet.

As above I mentioned how bootcamp killed my imac. well I got a call from the service centre today and they have found that it is the hard drive. so I should have it back in 3 days. so it might not have been the version my my imac.

As far as I know, the fact that for some users BootCamp failed to install XP (black screen syndrom) doesn't necessarily result in their totally losing access to their Mac (gray screen result)? I agree this is a huge bug, but are we sure it's necessarily the same?
Might as well result of a wrong choice when creating the XP partition, where they'd write on the OS X system by mistake. The XP installation interface is painstakingly ancient, everyone might make a mistake under DOS, it's quite easy.
