In an interview to french newspaper Le Figaro, CEO of France Telecom Stéphane Richard declared that carriers have decided not to advertise the iPhone any more.

Here is the most interesting part of the interview:

Do carriers have the possibility to regain control over Apple and Google?
Yes, I think we do, and that is why I have invited CEOs of Vodafone, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom to Paris for a meeting on October 8th. We want to think together about creating an OS, which was the Trojan horse used by Google, Apple and co to establish a direct relation with our costumers. We are militantly in favor of a more open World. Our four companies together represent close to a billion customers, so we can hit hard and can truly influence the market. It could take several forms: a common company, small plant for common applications, we will see… We don't want to be followers but regain control through innovation.

This summarizes the situation, Apple and Google are the No 1 enemies, the ones who enter people's phone without going through carriers.

Forming a cartel is illegal, isn't it?

Forming a cartel is illegal, isn't it?

It depends. There is no general rule about that in European Law (it says that they can't have any anti-competition behavior, which is a very general definition). However, before forming any kind of alliance, the carriers will have to ask for the approval of the EU.
