Today, and even more tomorrow with the rapid increase of core in our CPU, we would need more and more RAM for our computer, as nobody wants the system to start swapping files on the HD as it strongly impact performance. Today, it is almost a default configuration to have 4 GB of RAM in a notebook, 8 GB on a desktop and even more on a working station. If we had the cash, we could even add 64 GB of RAM in a Nehalem Xeon-based Mac Pro.
Indeed, OWC offers 8 GB DDR3 ECC RAM modules for dual CPU Mac Pro models. However, you should keep in mind that it needs to be the only type of modules installed in your computer, you can not have different type of RAM of different capacity. So, it has to be those 8 GB RAM modules only. For a single CPU-based Nehalem Mac Pro, 3 modules of 8 GB will cost you 1,399.99 USD, for 4 modules 1,799.99 USD. If you own a dual Xeon Mac Pro, you then can install 48 GB for 2,679.99 USD or even get the top configuration with 64 GB for ... 3,599.99 USD. AS most users do not need such high amount of RAM, only a minority of Pro users will have the cash for having such capacity of RAM.
