according to Tom's hardware :
QUOTE
Toshiba today said that it has shipped more than one million perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) HDDs since June 2005, more than 40 million Ipod-sized 1.8" hard disk drives over the past six years as well as more than four million 2.5" drives for automobiles.

According to leading research firm IDC, Toshiba led the worldwide mobile hard drive market in the segment of devices with a form factor of 2.5" and smaller with a 27 percent share. The company was the first hard drive manufacturer to announce perpendicular magnetic recording in 2004 and ship PMR drives in volume beginning in June 2005.

And, sadly, I am still waiting for my Hitachi 160 GB Travelstar…

From those 40 million 1.8" HDs, how many for iPods? biggrin.gif

Also, 4 million drives for automobiles, that's huge !

Automobiles ?

I'm kinda wondering why cars have such a need for high capacity storage - especially considering the constraints faced by a car in its daily usage, for which a mechanical piece of hardware might not be suitable. I would have expected that an 8 GB flash memory would be sufficient for car manufacturers. Anybody has an idea of the actual usage of such storage in cars ?

Perhaps it is for the car's blackbox, maybe also for other data collecting as well for use in tune ups and general repairs?
