The Wi-Fi Aliance announced that it would start at the beginning of 2010 certification for an evolution of the Wi-Fi standard. This time it does not act to extend the range or the increase the data flow, but to re-examine and simplify connection between the various devices.

Currently, there are two ways to be connected:

  • A connection in Infrastructure mode via a Wi-Fi base station that will route the data between the various peripherals. Everything must be connected on him.
  • An 'Ad Hoc' connection makes it possible to connect two devices directly, without having to pass through a router. One uses primarily this type of connection for breakdown servicing or if one has two Wi-Fi peripherals.

A third possibility will be proposed soon, it will be called Wi-Fi Direct. It will allow a connection Peer to Peer between all the devices. Each one will thus become a kind of access point on which several peripherals will be able to be connected, creating a kind of web between all the compatible devices.

You will be able, for example, to connect 3 computers  which are connected to mobile phones, and these phones will be able to also exchange data between them directly…
This technology will not replace the current system based on a central router, but it will simplify the interconnection of the various equipment without having obligatorily to pass through a router adding unnecessary load, for example while printing to a Wi-Fi printer.
We do not know if the current products could be updated, but we have the impression that it will not be the case.
