Hidden Preferences in Quick Time X, 03/09/2009 - Your reactions

Quick Time X is one of the new feature of Snow Leopard. It is faster and more reactive than the previous version, especially when running it in 64-bits mode. However, we were surprised by the lack of new features/functions released with QT X. Most advanced functions found previously in QuickTime Player have simply disappeared (copy/paste, track extraction, etc.). In addition, one can not really easily set the application the way we would like to use it. We know that Apple is used to improve new service/application over time, so let's be patient, future releases might unveil new functions and power. 


While waiting for such improvement, you can customize a bit your new toy, thanks to the following command line to be entered in the terminal:


No rounded corners for windows:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoRoundedCorners 1


Never display the control bar, function activated when the mouse icon leaves the playing windows:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutoshow 1


Always display the control bar:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutohide 1


Never display the title bar
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoTitlebar 1


Play automatically the title when opening it:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGPlayMovieOnOpen 1


Display sub-titles automatically:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGEnableCCAndSubtitlesOnOpen 1


Maintain full-screen display, even though QT Player is the active application:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGFullScreenExitOnAppSwitch 0


Allow simultaneous recordings:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGAllowMultipleSimultaneousRecordings 1


Display frameworks version numbers of Quick Time Player X components :
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGShowFrameworkVersions 1


Combine video display and audio when editing (timeline, activated when pressing "Alt" key)):
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGTimelineDisableAudioTrackForVideoMovies 0


Additional function allowing you to display audio-less/silent sequences when pressing "Alt" key:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGTimelineShowSlientRangesWithModifierKey 1


To come back to the default settings , you simply need to re-enter the command line and change 0 to 1 or vice versa.

[update]: 2 Alternative options to enable/disable the hidden preferences.  Most users will appreciate such GUI interactions over using a more intimidating command line.  The screenshots should be self explanatory.  The links to the GUI alternatives are below the respective screenshots.
