The USB Forum unveiled an update to the current USB 2.0 and 3.0 format, the USB Power Delivery/ The goal is to be able to deliver up to 100 W using the USB port.
![]() It requires to addition of two pins, and it would make it possible to the computer to deliver energy to more power-demanding peripherals, such as external 3.5" HD. But 100 W is more than enough for such external units, and the goal behind this new format is also to have a bidirectional powering system. So, it would also be possible to reload the battery of a mobile computer by simply plugging it to a powered peripherals... this could be an external HD or even smarter an external display. This new format could have a huge success and we would not be surprised if in the future the European Commission force all manufacturers to adopt it, as it is now the case for the Micro USB port for all mobile phones.
