Toshiba and Bridgelux announced that they have found the means of significantly lowering the manufacturing costs of LED diodes forlighting. The process would stop using sapphire as a substrate and instead use Gallium nitride for the benefit of the good old silicon largely used everywhere.


The interest is two fold. Not only is silicon much less expensive, but one can then use nany manufacturing plant of chips to produce LEDs. The production costs of LED diodes could then be divided by 8.
That could have a colossal impact not only in the market of lights but also in that of the screens intended for the television sets, computers and other apparatuses, tablets and mobile phones.
Of course it remains to be seen if the specifications of these new diodes will be at least similar to those which equip already our devices on the level of luminosity, consumption and durability. If it is well the case, the price of the screens and thus of thedevice could be lowered a few dollars to a hundreds of dollars according to their size and number of diodes necessary.
In any case the business is rather well committed so that Toshiba has invested its money in Bridgelux.
