TDK announced to have developed a new technology which combines a magnetic head with a laser to increase the density of writing on the platters of hard drives, that according to the company more than doubles their capacity.
Note: to our knowledge this is not the first time that such a project is launched. Others have tried in the past to also propose solutions with laser or even of the microwaves, the goal being always the same: to make heat very locally on the magnetic surface in order to make it possible finer and less powerful heads to modify the orientation of the magnetic particles. JUntil now, all these technologies had butted against the problem of the very localised focusing of heat against lthe very significant increase in weight of the heads that slowed down their movement.

This time, TDK seems certain that its technology is at the cutting edge and announces that discs proposing its system will be manufactured in mass by the end 2012. We are really curious to know if it will succeed. In this case, one should have in this term of the 3.5" hard disks that could start to approach d' a still unthinkable bar today,of the 10 TB.
