Reducing the electricity consumption of electronic devices on standby mode has been an ongoing concern for years.
Toshiba has decided to take some action and announced new LCD TVs and Blu-ray recorders, which will consume nearly 0W in standby mode. To do so, the company is using a system called Eco Chip, made of a capacitor and a mechanical relay between the AC power supply and the power supply board inside the device. When the device is in standby mode, the current is switched off completely and the capacitor provides just the power needed to leave the standby mode. When the charge in the capacitor gets too low, the mechanical relay puts the power back to charge it, which consumes 0.13W during 5 minutes, which is almost nothing. According to Toshiba, the first devices using that technology will be available during the 2011 fiscal year. By Machmeter, original by Lionel |
