I just found out from Apple's downloads page that the Tomb Raider Anniversary edition "requires a Mac with an Intel processor".
Apple bundled the original game with Macs back in 2001. Given that many Mac users may have upgraded to later Power PCs, but haven't yet migrated to Intel Macs, it seems a bit unfair that there's an assumption that all players of the original game must have moved to Intel by now. Let's hope that companies like Blizzard continue to keep the Power PC door open for another while. This post has been edited by Metalizer: Feb 17 2008, 01:44 AM |

I'm not confident on this one
Many games are Intel-only right now... Look at oll the new games: - Tomb Raider Anniversary - Heroes of Might and Magic V - Star Wars Empire at Wars - Guitar Hero III - Neverwinter Nights 2 - (probably) Ennemi Territory Quake Wars Some are also Intel-only due to CIDER: - Need for Speed Carbon - Battefield 2142 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars - Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 - Madden NFL 08 Heard that for these, it was not as good as expected (esp. NFS Carbon) Note: list to be updated (these are just the one I know/ heard about so far PS: moved the topic to the Games forum as well |

we can't just put all the responsibilities on the game developers too, it takes too hands to clap and i believe apple has as much to play in this as well.
that said ... what happened to EA Games? they did deliver but how much? |

I just checked the Macgold online retail site. All of their listed new releases except Tombraider Anniversary, are still given as compatible with Power PC.
However, with Tombraider Anniversary they added some further detail: "Requires an Intel processor. Does not run on Intel GMA processors (basically graphics cards with shared RAM as in Intel Mac Minis and MacBooks)" For some of the unreleased games they don't commit themselves to compatibility and advise to check with manufacturer. In the meantime it's interesting to note how Apple casts its hardware as gaming machines: http://www.apple.com/games/hardware/ P.S. found this interesting story from PC World on Mac games for 2008: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,140327-page,1/article.html This post has been edited by Metalizer: Feb 17 2008, 03:53 PM |

i don't mind the 'old' games as long as the prices are low enough.

Sure looks like the PPC is in the rear view mirror to me.. Consoles and such are being sold with PPC chips designed for home use. Sony seems ready to bundle Linux with its PS3s and would love for them to take a chunk out of the computer market. It only seems Nintendo is offering a pure gaming machine this time around. The future for IBM Procs seems great.
