Ekami, a member of our French forum, sent us the results of the tests he conducted on the Apple SSD installed in his 27" iMac.

To really see the difference, here is the bench of a C300 in a SATA II bus:

And now an M4 on SATA III:

As you can see, the performances of the Apple SSD are well under those of the SSDs available on the market today. In fact, these performances are about the ones we had on SSDs two years ago.
It would have been easy for Apple to do a lot better, especially since the SSD is on a SATA III bus in the iMac.
Don't worry if you bought an iMac with an Apple SSD inside, even an SSD from two years ago will make a huge difference compared to a regular HDD inside. In addition, integrating a posteriori an SSD in the iMac is too complex for most users.

Yes, that's right, but why should one pay premium price for performance which is on the level of two years ago ...

That's unfortunately what happens often with Apple. Look at the Mac mini or the MacBook: their CPU came out 3.5 years ago and you still have to pay $700 for one and $1,000 for the other. Same for the graphics on the Mac Pro, which are always available a year after they come out for PCs.
