While looking for the new body to buy for changing my good old D70 (a great SLR), I went through the web to get reviews and opinions about digital SLR.
hereafter are those websotes I consider as good references without being biaised by their love for on manufacturer or the other. - http://www.dpreview.com/ - http://www.steves-digicams.com/ - http://www.camerareview.com/ (not digital camera) - http://www.digitalreview.ca/ - http://www.dcresource.com/ |

hereafter is the new list - http://www.dpreview.com/ - http://www.steves-digicams.com/ - http://www.camerareview.com/ (not digital camera) - http://www.digitalreview.ca/ - http://www.dcresource.com/ - http://www.imaging-resource.com/ Have to agree dpreview is a very good site. Somteimes there are reviews on: http://www.luminous-landscape.com Its mostly DSLRs and digtial backs they test. As the author there is a professional fotorapher his reviews are more geared towards how good the cameras are to use on a day to day basis. |

Interesting...
Linathael... I used to have a D70 and now shoot with a D200... maybe that'll be of interest, when we next meet. personnally I use Dpreview as a basic info source, but I've come to the conclusion that any test shots that do not include - the horizon or - people is worthless to me... (highly personal opinion, of course...) I recently found http://www.photo.net/ not too bad other than that, there are many photographers website which are priceless... http://www.arnaudfrichphoto.com/menu.htm (both french and english, but most links are french) and then the "usual suspects": individuals that are often read and considered "references"... http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html#jump http://www.fredmiranda.com/ and some user communities.... http://www.nikonians.org/ I agree that Luminous landscapes is a brilliant place.... ok one last one, in french I know I know... http://www.volkergilbertphoto.com/index2.html |

I do not have the budget for this one I think I will get the D80 which has bee nreviewed very positively by most of the refence websites, the Canon XTi looks really disppointing. The new Nikkor 18/135 ED looks nice too ; I have the 18/70 D with my D70, and it is q greqt lens. When with iPhoto 6 one can get RAW format supproted, that is nice. I will soon play with Aperture and adobe counterpart probably during Christmas, when I will have time |

some more :
very detailed lenses reviews http://www.photozone.de/ gear database with the occasional review. http://www.slrgear.com Thom Hogan's Nikon Photography site : http://www.bythom.com/ I've got a D50 and love it. Tried the Canon XTi (and its older siblings at the time) is way too small for my hands, after holding it for 10 minutes I had a cramp in my thumb. For the D50, I have both kit lenses (a shame, I know). I purchased a Sigma 17-70m 2.8-4.5 and been very happy with it. The focusing motor is a bit noisy, but for 38,000 yens, it was quite a nice deal. I'm shooting RAW, because I am a beginner and that allows me to save a few pictures that otherwise would be unusable. iPhoto's RAW support is very poor. I mean sure it can display RAW files but that's pretty much all it can do. Preview.app can do that too. Adobe's Lightroom was my App of choice until Aperture 1.5 was released. I'm now using Aperture 1.5 on a black macbook (2GB) with an external hard drive to keep the RAW files safe. It's a very flexible setup that fits me well. The new Color Correction Tool rocks !! The D200 is a great box, but unless you shoot sport, I think the D80 is a fantastic "enlightened amateur" DSLR. I've tried it on many many occasions and it's a pleasure to hold and the interface is quite intuitive. |

Shame on me, I forgot Thom Hogan's Nikon Photography site, this is the place where I have read a review that made me deciding to buy a D70 when it will be available. Now I will go for D80 probably in January. I am also shooting in RAW format, for obvious reason, and I am also considering aperture, eventhough for the time being I have been using only Lightroom. I have also been looking at Canon, if the specifications of the body look similar, Canon lens are not as good as Nikkor. I have a Nikkor 18-70 D, a GREAT lens for everyday shooting. I have been considering the new 18-135 ED, but I need to read more review about it, it looks great on paper, especially considering the range of application, wide angle to medium range zooming (nice for shooting people's face.) |

Hi Kurisu!
well, my dear Linathael... do check out Aperture: Lightroom is much much more basic... and lacks tons of features (Aperture does too: photo software is young). as for lenses, I am absolutely convinced that the 18-70 is a "false friend": good but not as good as the body... even on a D70. I know they are outragously expensive, but Nikon's 'pro' lenses are the only ones justifying having a nikon body... rent the 17-55 for a week end and see for yourself!!! cheers mp |

since we were on the megapixel myth, i'll take this time to bring up an old topic too --- 1-pixel camera. below are some links for our conveniences. essentially, it is all about algorithms again and this apparently is using a technique called compressive sensing or compressed sensing.
