Last month we learned that Apple had decided not to work more in the future with Samsung to manufacture the successors of a5 processor. In addition to the arguments between the two companies, Apple would have preferred TSMC who are able to engrave chips in 28 nm very soon.
Perhaps to prove its knowhow, perhaps show Apple that they were wrong, Samsung has just announced to have succeeded in engraving first ARM chip in 20 nm. It is not as complex as the A5, but it is already functional. This also proves that the battle between the mobile manufacturers also will shift on the way of producing the best chip ARM as cheaply as possible. There still, Samsung has an advantage on Apple by having not only the knowledge to make but also the techniques means and the manpower to manufacture its own chips. By crispin, original by Lionel |

Nowhere does it stand in EE Times article that they have got back test wafers in 20 nm. 20 nm is at least 2 years from now at Samsung. Global foundries just got back it firsts 28 nm test wafers. Same with TSMC. It is impossible that Samsung would be a full node before its competition. Expecially since Samsung has made 0 28nm ARM chips. |
