Came across this. It is a steal if you need an in-built Superdrive for your older portables i.e. The TiPBs (esp. the first Gen). For convenience, I've copied the compatibility list: PowerBook G4 Titanium (all models) PowerBook G4 Aluminum (all models and screen sizes) iBook G4 (all models and screen sizes) PowerBook G3 Pismo and Lombard Mac Mini Intel iMac G5 iMac Intel iMac G3 Slot-Loading (all models) PowerMac G4 Cube |

very good point. but i'm pretty sure those stock drives can be easily "region-ed free", even if the mac side can't do it easily, one can boot into Windoze ... to do so.
however, i do wish to have one of those drives for the use of DVD-RAM. |

Be it in Windows or Mac OS X. Recent portable machines from Apple use Matsushita (Panasonic) drives, which have nasty encrypted firmwares and validation procedures which make them literally "un-flashable". case in point : http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=187034#187034 The only recourse to having a region-free drive in a MacBook (Pro) or recent Powerbook is to physically replace the drive with one that can be flashed. |

that is so carp. btw, the kind soul who used to worked on those firmware update has been recuited by Apple, was he not? i kinda recall reading that somewhere on rpc site back then. haven't really been following rpc since the times of Luxor Jr (iMac SD, flashed it then and worked really nice)
maybe those nasty encrypted firmware and validation may take some time to crack ... some bright sprark will bring us joy once more. let's wish, hope, pray and probably curse as well ... |
